As a conservative and an ex-Marine, I've always considered pollution to be as nasty as tyranny. Like all human rights, though, any legislation designed to alleviate one will impact the other.
That said, the Bull Moose Party - Teddy - did the most.
Another Ted (Kennedy) hired a team of attorneys to halt construction of shallow-ocean wind-turbines SIXTEEN MILES off the coast; 16 miles from his family compound.
Why?
It would spoil the view.

1909-1913 President Teddy Roosevelt a noted environmentalist who authored books on naturalism and fought for environmental protection initiatives set aside wetlands, parks, limited industrial development. Established federal services to protect the environment and was a republican. (though he later became bitter towards the party and left to found his own political party which unfortunately failed.)
1969 Richard M. Nixon (republican) signs National Environmental Policy Act and creates the Environmental Protection Agency.
So I guess you could say Republicans have done quite a lot. But what have they done for us lately? For the record I am a Independent former republican but I am not afraid to give the GOP its due just as I condemn it often for its current policies.

The godfather of Conservation is without question Teddy Roosevelt. While he was listed as a republican and surely had many conservative values I will add that he is somewhat of a gray are ideologically.
Wetland conservation and the like is without a doubt dominated by hunters..I think that needs no further political explanation.
Curiously enough it is the ethanol and wind energy crowd that threatens habitat and ecosystems the most through loss of habitat and the resulting soil conservation concerns. Again I think we know who is doing what there but it does have a bi-partisan component to it.

heres my 10 tips to save the planet..
#10 Who needs a big gas guzzling mower? Why not instead pick up a pair a hedge cutters or pair of scissors and manually cut your yard. It may take longer than usual but just think how much gas money you would be saving not to mention the pollution.
#9 Re-use your food. This may sound gross at first but theres several recipes online you can print off to use. Basically theres two methods. The "binge and Purge" method and the "stool" method. Just put it in a rubber container and keep using it for your meals. Saves money and helps reduce all the food packaging that kills dolphins.
#8 Collect your belly button lint in a jar until you have enough to make a sweater. It will keep you warm in the winter and save you money having to buy something that was probably made in a sweatshop by a 4yr old mexican anyway.
#7 Instead of going to the bookstore and buying tons of books that waste the planets precious resources, how about writing your own. It will save the earth a lot of paper. All you have to do is a buy a few sheets of recycled paper and write your own novels to read. Just make sure you write in pencil so you can erase it and use it again.
#6 Stop having children! This is pretty self explanatory, the more children that are born the more damage to the planet is done.
#5 No more vehicles. I propose you start walking everywhere you go regardless of the distance. You can sell your car, truck, or suv and give the proceeds to the homeless.
#4 Live in tents. You can be camping nomads, just think how much fun it could be. You can sell your house and use the money to give to the homeless who can use it. And...your saving the planet.
#3 No more water! Instead drink your own urine. It doesnt taste all that bad and just think you would be protecting our water resources. This would also include no bathing.
#2 No more eating meats, fish, or chicken. The useless killing of animals and wildlife needs to stop! Instead eat some grass or insects.
#1 Kill Yourself. I wouldnt suggest this be mandatory but on a volunteer basis. If you feel need to no longer go on you would be eliminated free of charge. The more volunteers the better. I believe this would have the most impact on saving our planet.

No one really. Dems like to talk the talk, but to be honest, how does holding back water in California's beltway, in order to save a fish that isn't indigenous to the area, while forcing people to starve and costing the local economy Billions of dollars, do anything for the environment.
The fish they are trying to protect don't even belong there, so we'll destroy thousands of lives, and drive up the cost of food, for what?
We all need to wake up, these people are starving, literally, the millions of dollars for food California spent to feed them, only carries them to next week.

Teddy Roosevelt committed a lot of land to national parks. A good move in my opinion. Carter created the EPA I believe. This agency under the current administration is responsible for putting 80,000 farmers out of work and will cause a 15% rise in price as well as shortage of food to save a 2" smelt (fish), the cattle ranchers have lost some of their grazing land to preserve wild horses, and the commercial fisherman are about to lose their trade to save the loggerhead turtles. My question is, what are we supposed to eat? Grass? I wouldn't be surprised if they don't find some little ecosystem residing in there too.
