i am going to join the navy...and i am hoping to get into mass communications and be a photographer...i have to go and take classes and such but i want to know your advice on this...has anyone done this???tell me everything about it!

Like most rates right now, you really have to study hard to be advanced.

My buddy was a photographer and I looked forward to the stories he had because he was always called on to document medical things--specifically really bad cases of genital herpes and chlamydia.
His descriptions were so detailed and gross, but I just had to listen.

We were on a carrier, so his photography duties were anywhere from just taking pictures of sailors for their portfolios, goings-on around the ship, burials at sea, to nasty medical stuff.

I've know a few...it's pretty much like taking pictures for the paper most days but whenever there's a crime/accident etc. you'll be called on to make a photographic record of the event...if your any good they'll send you to film school (motion pictures)...a friend of mine got sent to USC for that but it's pretty rare...advancement is slow but most of the photographers mates I knew were happy in their work...aircrew and satellite photo analysis are also a possibility bit I couldn't tell you too much about that...bottom line...keep your dress uniform looking good because most of the time your taking pictures of the higher ups BUT you get an excellent education while doing it...good luck

MC is way overmanned, advancement sucks and frankly.. probably isn't even open right now. and they do NOT guarantee the NEC/ C school for what used to be PH.. you could spend the entire time.. writing articles.
