Who can tell me briefly and clearly on HOW the US election process works?

Why are the candidates going from one state to another over a long period of time to get their votes??? Why US did NOT fix a particular polling day for entire states in the country???just like the rest of democratic countries of the world? And how do I know who is winning at this point of time?
