I know that people sometimes write to TV shows when they portray a certain group in a negative way, to complain, or in a positive way, as appreciation. Last week on Gossip Girl (a show which I love, actually) Blair (my favorite character) made a comment about children with cleft palate which I found distasteful and disrespectful. She was encouraging another character to donate money to help homeless dogs and said something along the lines of 'see, aren't these puppies much cuter than those babies with cleft palate you wanted to donate to?'
It may seem like a small comment but there is a reason why they don't make these comments about children with down syndrome, for example, and that is because they are blatantly hurtful to the people and their families affected by it. I have a little sister who was born with cleft palate and she is an adorable baby. I love Gossip Girl and I plan to keep watching it, I doubt the writers were intentionally trying to be hurtful but trying to come up with a line that fit with Blair's character, but I still feel that was unnecessary and I was offended by it. I don't expect the writer's to care and I know even if they do it's not like they can go back and change it.... but nonetheless, TV shows usually want to keep up with public opinion, I am part of the public, I want to tell them my opinion. It's better than not saying anything at all.
My question is, who can I write to or e-mail to? Anyone have any idea? I will choose best answer and I thank you in advance for your time and your help.
