Verily, Allah wishes to drive away all evils from you, O Ahlul Bayt, and cleanse you thoroughly. (al-Ahzab, 33:33)
Who are they?
According to the hadith book Muslim, here is what it says:
Book 031, Number 5955:
(Reported by the wife of the holy prophet pbuh)
'A'isha reported that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) went out one norning wearing a striped cloak of the black camel's hair that there came Hasan b. 'Ali. He wrapped hitn under it, then came Husain and he wrapped him under it along with the other one (Hasan). Then came Fatima and he took her under it, then came 'Ali and he also took him under it and then said: Allah only desires to take away any uncleanliness from you, O people of the household, and purify you (thorough purifying)
the hadith book is called "Sahih Muslim"
Who are the chosen Ah lulbayt? I am not citing a book from the school of ahlulbayt, dear respected brother in Islam, i am citing one of the main sources from our brothers/sisters in the ahle sunnah.
I made nothing exclusive
The select members who were purified, are narrated by the wife of the holy prophet pbuh, why was she, or the others wifes, not part of the cloak too?
Tebriz, each verse in the holy Quran has a context. We can not combine two verses in the same context, in one verse Ah lulbayt refers to the wives, and in the other verse, and even according to Ayesha, they are the select members.
It's also important to note that all the mufasareen have agreed upon that the Aayat starting from " Inama Youride ... " is an independednt Ayat, infact an independent "Juz" of the whole Ayat of 33:33 and was revealed as an individual and independent Ayat. So it is imperative to determine at which occassion this Ayat was revealed.
Jonathan, the Ayah is a completely seperate one from the verses before it, so we need to analyse when they were revealed
The second sentence of verse 33:33 (Innama Yurred...) is independent of the rest of the verse and the verses before and after it, for the simple reason that its revelation had a unique context. This is unanimously accepted by ALL mufassireen, and there is no doubt as to the event at which 33:33 was revealed.
There are Sunni scholars who have narrated and accepted ahadeeth to the effect that the Ahl ul Bait was revealed upon those 5, and the wives were not part of the Ahl ul Bait.
they include:
Al Hakim: in his Mustadrak he has narrated the event of the kisa and has mentioned that the Umm Salma asked the Prophet (S): Umm Salama said: "O Prophet of Allah! Am I not one of the members of your family?" The Holy Prophet replied: "You have a good future but only these are the members of my family. O Lord! The members of my family are more deserving." (v2, p416) He then says that this hadeeth is saheeh as per Bukhari's standards, though he never narrated it. He also narrates many many other
