Let me begin this by saying I am not in the least racist. I understand that not all people of one race act a certain way, and personally I haven't given two hot steaming turds about race until a few years ago when I started studying the psychology behind it. I am a 20-something Psych major, who studied business and law before switching. I am from a lower end middle class family with two parents, mixed race (Latino, African American and Caucasian) who has worked through homeschooling (since I was 15ish) and all through college to support my education as I received little to know financial aid and very small scholarship donations. I am normal. I have a multicultural group of friends and am very popular on campus as well as active on Black Student Union, French Culture Club, our Student Activity Productions Club, Student Government and a Sorority which will not be named here. I will reiterate: I am not under and circumstances racist.
Now to my question.
Recently in Student Gov. we had a student come forward asking to create a Caucasian ("He used the term "white") or European Culture Club. He had backing from a professor, and had a lot of facts to back up that while other minorities were represented on campus, there is no representation or anything for "White" students. After a presentation, we all debated. This caused a lot of controversy for us, and I have to say, I agree with the student, as did several other board members.
Now there is a large divide on our board and our school has called for a "Hush Hush" forum with us. The school wants to nip this club in the bud and even possibly prevent the student from petitioning us if he does not get his way. I do not know how to feel, as I feel the act of preventing this student from creating a non-exclusive club celebrating Caucasian culture is not a bad thing. I feel that this racism issue is a way for minorities to cry wolf, and as a minority myself, I am tired of the pity seeking ways many of my own race(s) have. After speaking my mind on this issue to the board, I went home and received a call from my Sorority threatening me and my position on that board due to "Poor choices, Racism, and Un-sisterly Conduct".
This issue has spiraled out of control, and has caused me to look at my race(s) under a microscope. Until now I have has moments with all races where I have been put under a microscope and judged but I have never cared. Now I don't know how to react to this, if I should speak up, if this is blatant racism against a "White Person", and why race matters so much now. We all tip toe around this issue, and in researching I have fund no evidence regarding any cases of documented racism towards whites making into the media.
I need help. I don't want racism to be an issue anywhere, and I certainly feel uncomfortable silencing any race of person from speaking. People of any race, please tell me what you think, and speak honestly. I feel that no matter where we come from, no matter what level of education, no matter what race or religion this affects us, and I need to know what others would do in my situation.
Thank you.
(Please note that no university will be named in this question and I will not entertain any media.)
Sorry for all spelling errors, this is an emotional issue for me.
...
If you look at my picture you can plainly see I am Latino...?
Why would I lie on the internet in this long of a post seeking answers if I wasn't confused about what to do and seeking answers from other people of color and race?
People who say I am not a minority/I am racist, please go elsewhere as you obviously did not read the question, and can not plainly state an informative and insightful opinion.
Thank you again.
