White lump on tongue...PLEASE help!

About a month and a half ago I noticed a small, oval-ish, flat patch on my tongue in the middle, closer to the tip. It didn't hurt, so I paid no real attention to it. Since then it hasn't gotten bigger width wise, but height wise it has become enlarged and 3-D is the best word I can use. It looks like a white piece of food is stuck on my tongue, but it's 100% definitly not food. I haven't bitten my tongue or anything. It has become annoying and a bit painful (sore).
I have looked at pictures of swollen taste buds, canker sores, oral/tongue warts, Leukoplakia, and cancer. It doesn't really look like any of these!
Does anyone have ANY idea what this might be??
I'll probably be making an appointment with my doctor, but I'm going to feel kind of embaressed if I go in and all it is is a simple taste bud.
Thanks!!

Could you have burned your tongue? I used to do this often with hot pizza. It took a few days for it to get back to normal after I did that. The raising up and whiteness of it could be due to fluid from the burn.

Yes, check with your doctor. Burns tend to heal in a week or so. It may be some type of infection.

Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

Did you find anything to help? I have something similar, I think. Mine has been around for about 4 months. I really thought it was an enlarged tastebud. I started taking probiotics 5 days ago. I think its helping some.
