Whining sound?

My computer is making a whining sound. Based from my inspections-- it's coming from the fan of the power supply. It's like watching a cyclist peddal itself up a steep hill everyday. My PC's 2 yrs. old, but is that enough sign of age? Whenever I hear that whine, I also notice that my firefox browser would start having script problems (specially while downloading images). Is it the power supply or something else?

Btw, my pc is a: Compaq Presario SR1810NX (Sempron 3200+) with on-board 256 MB integrated video chip; 100 GB HD; dual optical drives (1x CD/DVD combo & 1x DVD+WR); 1.5 GB RAM; integrated sound chip. When I bought it, it didn't have the extra 1 gig of RAM and the 2nd optical drive (DVD+WR). I added those 2 months after.

For measure, recently I bought an external HD and backed-up my sensitive files. Yet, despite the freeing up of space the whining remained. Running my SpyNoMore, Spybot and Avast yields nothing. So I don't know what's up! Your help is much appreciated. Thanks
