I have heard that when your toddler whines to ignore them to teach them that whining will not be rewarded with attention. Is this alright to do? Any other advise to conquer whining?

That all depends on what the whining might be about. It's hard for a 1 yr old to communicate sometimes so if the basics have been met.......he/she isn't hungry/sleepy/ill; diaper is ok, etc... then YES, it's perfectly alright to ignore the whining. They won't have the audience and they'll eventually stop because they will soon understand that it will not get them what they want anyway.
The same goes for full-on tantrums....make sure they're in a safe place and just walk away.
It's not easy ; It will take effort from you to stick with it and not give in.

You'll probably get differences of opinion on this one.I for one do not ignore my children for any reason. If a one year old is whining there is a reason they are either not feeling well, tired, hungry, wanting some cuddles or they are bored so if you can tune into your child you can figure out what is wrong and help them. when their communication skills improve then you can teach them that they must tell you what is wrong in their ordinary voice or you can't understand what they are saying that usually breaks the whining habit over time but a 1 year old is a bit young to understand that yet.
