Which way would i come off cheaper plane then rent a car or just rent a car?

I have to go to New Jersey Memorial day weekend. I just recently found out that my mother is in the hospital and my cousin has pneumonia and almost died and we were extremely close. Plus a girlfriend of mine having a cookout and i really want to go cause its been almost two years since i went. My budget is 400. The thing is I am underage, i am 23 years old. What are my best options? Should i ask a relative or friend to rent the car for me so i can at least save 100 bucks?
I live in north carolina
