I'm about to acquire a used Playstation 3 and the guy says it can play PS2 games. I'm just wondering which version that would be, because I could have sworn I heard the PS3 isn't backwards compatible. He doesn't know how much hard drive capacity it has which makes things harder for me. Anyone got any suggestions? How do you check the hard drive capacity?

The 20 gb and the 60 gb are backwards compatible heres a site that goes deeper into it in the sources

well there are multiple version of ps3, 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB. the 20 and 60 are discontinued but they both can play ps2 games and 80GB will also play the ps2 games too but the 40GB will not. I own the 60GB and yeah it can play ps2 and ps1 games pretty cool

The easiest way to tell is by the USB ports, if it has 4, it can play ps2 games, if it has 2 it cannot

You can check the hard drive capacity by going to the XMB(menu on the ps3) then settings, then system information

ps3 20gb=yes can play ps2 games
ps3 40gb=no
ps3 60gb=yes can play ps2 games
old ps3 80gb= some ps2 games
new ps3 80gb= no

Here is a site that will tell you which PS3 are B/C: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation_3

Although, the new 80GB that is 400 dollars is not backwards compatible, same with the 160GB that is coming before Christmas. If you want to check how much room you have, go to settings, system settings, system information. Say you have an 80GB like I do (MotorStorm pack), it'll say you have 64/74 GB left, the reason is because of all of the OS on the HDD.

Heres a chart:

20 Gig (Discontinued): Full Backward Compatibility

40 Gig: No Backward Compatibility

60 Gig (Discontinued): Full Backward Compatibility

80 Gig: Limited Backward Compatibility
(Instead of using PS2's EE chip, Sony used software emulation to cut down on costs of this model, only old titles that weren't popular do not work on this system).

60GB and the 80GB
The 80GB core pack for $399 doesn't have backwards
The only 80GB that has backwards are the MGS4 bundle and the other 1 that comes with Motorstorm.

It's now hard to find a PS3 that plays PS2 games.
