Which version of Adobe Photoshop do I use?

Ouch..

I was going to download photoshop, but there are so many versions, I don't know which to use. I am not a professional photographer or anything like that, I just like to edit photos, change their background colors and change different objects to different colors. Which version would be ideal for me?

For the kinds of casual use you describe, you will likely find that any of the Photoshop Elements versions more than adequate.

For under $100, Elements can do what you list and much, much more. There is little reason for you to spend several hundreds more to have features you will never use. There are many subtleties to a full version Photoshop that few but dedicated professionals access. I read way too many descriptions, here, on Yahoo Answers of people purchasing full version Photoshops who don't even know the most basic functions.

As I like to describe in analogy, it is like someone spends a couple of hundred thousand dollars for a high performance sports car, only to use it to fetch groceries.

You can do all that with free programs that are available such as GIMP, but if it's Photoshop that you are definitely after then Elements 7 is excellent for beginners to advanced amateurs.
