Which type of bike provides more stability?

I mean, for a non-athlete type person, urban rides mostly, and kind of shorty (5ft 4"); road bikes have always tempted me for their lightness and speed, but I'm afraid that they lack the stability of a comfort or hybrid bike... however, it would be easier to find a nice used road bike than paying the full price of trendy comfort bike...

Don't buy anything without trying it out. And remember, any new bike will feel different--you have to get used to it. Learn to ride it.
 
If you're short a women specific hybrid would probably suit you best. Road bikes are more for training, and new they cost a lot more than hybirds.
Shop around, check out ebay and craigslist as well as your local stores and see what you can find.
