which two cars are good for a family with 2 small kids?

Both my wife and I drive. i have to drive to work. my wife may want to take the kids to some places, like doctor office, temple, etc. and over the weekend, the whole family to some relative and recreation places. I am thinking of having a honda civic or an alternate, for daily commute and a honda odyssey or an alternate mini van for family travel. are these good choices and solve the purpose?
