Someone else asked this question a few days ago. So I'm just going to tell you exactly what I told them.
"Out of the two I preferred Rune Factory 2 here's why. In RF2 you get to play two different generations as the main guy and as his child. It is also the only current RF that lets you play as a girl character (the main guy can have a son or daughter). There is also a fun feature called the help board. The townspeople put notes there asking for help. A fun thing to do after you finish farming. In RF1 it is extremely hard to upgrade your house so you can get married. In RF2 your house starts large enough to get married with a big bed included as well. There is also one girl in RF1 that you can't marry unless you are able to WiFi with another person. On the subject of marriage there are rivals for certain girls in RF2. Unlike in RF1 where besides the girl you marry the others have to stay single forever. The rival couples in RF2 also have rival children that you can befriend when you play as a kid. And it also fixed some of the problems with dungeons and monsters. In both games monsters drop items needed to forge but in RF1 it took forever to get one item. Monsters drops are much more common in RF2. And in RF2 there are four main dungeons which are available from the start and then the final one. There were eight different dungeons in RF1 which had to be unlocked one at time. Which might seem like a good thing except when you realize you need a specific item but you can only get it in one cave and you can't get to that cave until you unlock and beat the ones before it (that happens a lot when you try to forge better items). Not to mention there was one dungeon that could only be accessed during Winter. So you had to unlock it then wait until it was Winter just to go to it. Then if you didn't beat the boss and unlock the next dungeon by end of the season you wouldn't be able to move on with the plot until it was Winter again. Four dungeons (one for each season) is all you need especially since they are much bigger then the RF1 dungeons. I know this sounds biased toward RF2 and it kind of is. I love both the games but RF2 really did it better then the first. The only thing I can think of that might be better is someone could prefer the characters in RF1 over RF2. I don't but someone else might. Basically RF1 is worth getting but it is much harder. It's still a really good game just not as good."
