He was very poor, lived in a cottage in the woods, and died of something like cholera/tuberculosis/pneumonia. They didn't have any heating in the house so to keep him warm as he lay dying on the floor his wife piled blankets and their animals/pets (cats I believe) on him to keep him warm.
