The rteason for the hybrid is I must take the LIE (long Island Expressway) to work each day and with the hybrid I can use the HOV lane and save 1/2 hour each way.I go from exit 73 to exit 32 during rush hours. .

What until the new Honda Insight comes out. It will be better than both and cheaper.

Don't waste your time with a hybrid. The break even point makes them not worth the added expense. Here's why.

I will use the gasoline only and the hybrid Honda Civic in this example. I will use $2.00 per gallon for the price of gasoline.

The base model gasoline Honda Civic starts at $15,505. This model is rated at 35 MPG highway.

The base model hybrid Honda Civic starts at $23,650. This model is rated at 45 MPG highway.

The gasoline only Civic costs about 5.714 cents per mile for fuel at $2.00 per gallon.

The Hybrid Civic costs 4.444 cents per mile for fuel at $2.00 per gallon

The hybrid Civic costs $8,145 more than the gasoline model.

You will need to drive the hybrid Civic 641,149 miles to save enough in fuel to make up the $8,145 price difference.

Then if you add the additional cost of replacing the battery packs over the lifetime of the vehicle and it takes even longer to break even. For the most part, the vehicle will be in the salvage yard well before you break even.

Another thing to consider is that most private mechanics will not work on a hybrid. This means that any maintenance will have to be done by the dealer. It always costs more for maintenance at a dealer than a private mechanic.

You will get similar figures if you compare the Prius with a similar sized Toyota.

You come out way more ahead if you buy a gasoline only car.

Personally I would wait to get any hybrid at the moment, especially if you're wanting it for environmental reasons. They are great on gas, but unfortunately the batteries for the electric motor are worse for the environment than us using gas. I've heard the batteries actually die fairly fast, and once they do, they end up being put into waste where they stay.

I would suggest looking into cars that are really good on the gas mileage for now if you have to have a new car. I have a 2006 Scion XB that gets 28mpg highway and usually 29.5-30mpg city. Yes, that's right, it does better in the city than on the highway. Plus I know they run fairly cheap, and are reliable.

If you have your heart set on a hybrid then between the two, toyota's prius is supposed to be better. Currently other companies are trying to catch up with this trend, and will be putting out more hybrids soon.

Prius beats the civic hands down. It gives better mpg and civic's electric motor never fully takes over.
But the about to be launched Honda Insight gives the prius run for the money. It is cheaper and work in the same way as the prius.
So wait till mid year before buying.
