N73 - Slippery joystick, small keyboard.

N70 - Tiny keyboard poorly laid out, all blue keypad lights.

N80 - Appalling D-pad, terrible GSM 900.

N72 - Microscopic keypad

E70 - Worst joystick ever, '2' key thumb fouls fascia.

6630 - Excessively curved key arrangement made keying on the LHS difficult.

6600 - Really stiff joystick select, S/End buttons out of reach

Currently with the best of the bunch to date, the really quite nice 6680 ... D-pad could be a little better.

Roll on N95 with independent D-pad select button.
 
I find the N80's d-pad completely satisfactory. It's precise, easy to reach, and always does exactly what I expect it to do. What's appalling about it?

The keypad, though, leaves something to be desired. The keys offer too much resistance, and in dim light the upper row is almost invisible. That's a problem since I lack the talent of touch-typing with my thumb.

The 6682 has the best keypad of any phone I've tried.

Two things, the N80's dpad is cheap feeling but the E70-2's joystick is one of the best ever.
 
You know what kills me? I've got an old 6585 (cdma) lying around the house and this thing's keyboard is miles ahead of my N73 in terms of touch and quality. Nice firm buttons, not cheapy feeling plastic.
 
N80's D-pad i okay-ish, IF it wasn't for the fact that it will KILL you if you don't shave regularly. In fact, that's why I sold mine, (well, that, and the battery life).
I once read that the Sci-Fi author Neil Gaiman had the same problem with his N80+beard.
 
I actually liked the 6630 keypad a ton, but too each his own I guess. I just know I could text faster on the 6630 then on almost any other phone.

The N80 D-pad was fine with me, but I agree with the poster above who said that the keypad isn't the greatest.

The n73 has the WORST keypad I've ever used, period.

Call me clueless, but I'm trying to make the connection between facial hair and a mobile d-pad, and for the life of me I just keep drawing a blank.
 
Lol, I actually know what he means... if you hold the n80 up to your face, and have a fair amount of scruff, the hairs get caught in the D-Pad and then pulled out when you take it away from your face.

The way I hold the phone it didn't happen all the time, but it did occasionally, and getting plucked by a phone isn't my idea of fun!

Don't know what some of you are used to, but the N80 D-pad is poor.
You press select and it goes up.
Press up and it selects.
Press down and it goes left or right.
It's egregiously imprecise and off-pissingly annoying.
For those who think it's acceptable, try the pad on a Sammy D-900.
The N95 should address that though.
And if you have small to average handsize, keypads won't really be an issue.
It's only when you've used keys and pads that work flawlessly that you understand what a poor one is.
 
I definitely will agree with you that having a separate select button from the D-pad is always preferable, I'm just saying I didn't think the n80 was all that bad... I didn't experience all the problems you are talking about with imprecision more than occasionally.
