Which Jeep Wrangler would be better for me?

The newer (redesigned)1997 4 cylinder or the older 1993 6 cylinder? I live in Southern California and I am planning to use the vehicle as a 2nd vehicle, more of a summer go-to-the-beach car or drive-up-to-the-mountains car. Maybe very light off-roading, if any. I have an autistic 10 year old that likes driving around in a car, but I'm not sure if the suspension on the '97 is that much better for a little smoother ride on the back bench. Also, can the tops be "rolled back" on these or do they have to be removed completely? Any response is appreciated.
 
from a mechanical standpoint, the 6 cylinder is better. the 4.0L motor is legendary, has more power than the 4cyl, and really no sacrifice in fuel mileage. IF it ever fails (and that's a big if), there are bukus of 4.0s available for replacement.
