I've read of the process of publishing a short story collection. If I'm not mistaken, it goes like this.
1. Get your short stories featured in several reputable publications. The more prestigious or respectable the publication, the better. Having your short story published in a magazine such as The New Yorker is very desirable.
2. Once you have a reputation as one of the better known short story writers published in various renowned publications, you may now approach an agent to propose the publication of your short story collection.
In contrast, I've heard publishing a great first novel is easier than publishing a short story collection for the first time.
My question only deals with publication through major publishing houses or respectable publishers.
Please, don't give me answers about vanity presses or self-publishing.
