Which is a better overall bike? Mountain or Cruiser?

I've been looking at getting a bike to mainly ride around town, back and forth between college, and maybe on some mountain trails to save gas and get some exercise. Would a mountain bike or a cruiser be better for this? Which one would last longer with the everyday wear & tear I'd put on it? And my budget will only allow $150 at most, so what are some dependable brands of bikes that will stay in my budget? Thanks.

firstly i wouldn't ride any trails with a cruiser so I would go with a mtb because they are so versatile. secondly I would stay away from any new bike under 150. Maybe if you can a used or half price bike for 150. but if you insist on going that cheap forge or schwinn, but even so I would save up at least 225, that price range has a lot more quality and you will probably money b/c of repair bills in the long run. i would go with a nice hard tail mountain bike made by trek, Gary fisher, or specialized. don't go too walmart and buy junk.

Look for a used hybrid or comfort mountain bike on the local ebay or Craig's list. Anything new is going to be junk at that price point.
