The 106 is the better bet. The car is well proven and reliable, especially the engine. I also think you will have a greater choice as the 106 was the most popular. It is an easy car to work on and spares are cheap and plentiful. Try to get one with full service history if you can as it is likely to be in good condition. Test drive is essential. If the seller declines, walk away.

Hey, i am a young driver and am still currently learning to drive but hopefully should'nt be too long before i pass now. I need to start thinking about cars and which would be better out of:
Peugeot 106 (1.1)
or
Fiat punto (1.2)
I am looking around the 2000 - 2001 registrations and i have found that fiats generally are a bit cheaper but have more miles on the clock what do you suggest? I need to be thinking about insurance too.
