Which flash would be safe for a 35 mm canon AE-1?

I just got an old 35mm Canon AE-1, it's awesome and i'm really psyched to start using it but it came with two flashes, one is a sunpak 221 auto flash and the other is a canon speedlite 177a, but i've read some places that the first one (the sunpak) may not be safe to use because the voltage is too high and it might fry the camera, but i've also read that, that's only true for newer digital cameras. So i just wanted to make sure before i start using either. Is the sunpak safe for my camera? And is the old canon speedlite safe for my camera as well? Help would be much appreciated! Thank you!
