these earphones are supposed to amplify the sound at source, which is obvious as they block out most of ambient noise. also they have more bass than shure headphones and are more balanced than bose ones. playlistmag.com claims that these are the best in-ear phones for below $100.

my choices are limited to in-ear earphones as i dont want anything bulky.

has anyone really invested in really good earphones to go with their phones, or will it be a disappointment?
i really dont wanna invest $100 into a pair only to discover that the output of my N73ME is not up to the mark..

Hi, I actually own both the Etymotic ER-4P and the Shure E4C.
And to be honest they do sound good with Nseries phones like N93, N95, N91.
But the phones themselves are the weakest link, you'll need far better audio equipement to get the best out of these earphones.

But the N91 is the best sounding Nseries besting even the N95 in this area, in my opinion it sounds the best with these headphones.

But getting back on sujbect I would not recommend buying these $300+ headphones, but something more in the category of $150 like Etymotic ER6:http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er6.aspx
But they can be found online for much cheaper.

ETY-ER4P. This is the first time in a long while that I am using them in "P" configuration (as opposed to "S") and using them on my phone instead of my iPod + LaRocco PR-II amp. They sound good, but better on my iPod + amp. The convenience is really worth it and I save my iPod + amp for long flights and journeys.

I've got Nokia's HS-20 headset on my E70-2. It's got a stereo audio adapter attached (oem nokia) that I like to hook-up my Koss TD85's. Sound quality is incredible considering the price...(it fell off the back of one of the trucks at my friends' job...)

I've got some BeyerDynamic DT770 Pro 80's with a PAV2 pocket amp (ebay it). I use the same combo on my iPod, and I've never heard a clearer tone for the price.

thank you all for your replies..

i dont intend to spend more than $100 on a pair of earphones as the music i have on my phone is generally between 128kbps-192kbps and the sound output of N73ME is not as much as the N91's, i wish nokia would do something about it with a firmware upgrade as the phone is definitely capable of louder volumes on the earphones. that said, there's no point going for really expensive earphones as the better they get the more they will reveal the flaws in the compressed format music, we're definitely not talking of keeping lossless music on our phones..

so i have narrowed down my choices to the following 3 earphones which are all decently priced over at amazon.com

Sennheiser CX300 [$55]

Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 Studio [$72]

V-MODA Vibe Gunmetal Black [$76]

the Vibes are metal so they'll be more durable but the plug is not angled, which can be a problem, plus they're a bit too stylish for me, and come with a golden leather pouch for carrying them, which is absolutely useless for me as i wont be seen dead with them.

The UE are definitely gonna provide maximum noise cancellation, and seem the least obvious with asymmetrical cords that go over the ears, that'll be comfy. and cause less microphonics.

I dont know much about the CX300 but they seem attractive for their price. but they wont be able to provide much noise cancellation, just like the Vibes.

can you guys tell me which one to go for from among these 3.

My brother has the V-Moda Vibe's and I thought my Etymotic ER-6i's sounded far better. I believe the current price for the Etymotics online is around $70 US.

Hi gauravgiri,

The first thing to realise is the weakest link in playing Music from your device which IMO is the connector with 3.5mm jack you are best off getting a Nokia Original as a cheap connector will really drag the sound down. I listen to quite a lot of Music via my device and on the N93 bought an AD-46 to use with a pair of Sony MDR-EX71SL's which gave a very good result. As these headphones were getting to be a couple of years old and have very thin wires i decided to upgrade my headphones and after careful consideration went for a pair of Black Shure EC2's. The construction and over all quality of these are definitely a step up excellent feel and nice thick wire the sound performance is a noticeable step up IMHO. The sound is rich and full with plenty of Bass response and good sound separation and all my Music is encoded @160kbps AAC which averages 4mb per track.
The other thing was the Shure's cost me just ?40 delivered from Amazon and IMO are worth every penny.

thanx for you reply Marc, i do have the original Nokia AD-41 3.5mm adapter that came in the package with my N73ME, what i'm not satisfied with is the pair of earphones that came with it.
i'm considering getting the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 Studio earphones to go with the phone, they're for $73 at Amazon.com and will provide the maximum sound isolation in the sub $100 price range, a bit uncomfortable compared to the Vibes, as they are proper in-ear-phonese while the Vibes are buds, but the sound is worth it.
