Which DSLR would be best for photography learners (as professional as possible)?

I am planning on gifting my girl a D SLR. I have NO clue about cameras but she is learning about photography in college, so she knows quite a lot. She would be using it for outdoor excavations & parties. She always denies the need for extra Mega pixels. This is all I know. If I could be helped with the best in the market in a good price range, I'd be grateful. Thank you.xx
I was looking at Nikon D60 though...
 
In the Nikon world, a D90 would be a good starter for someone who already has their feet wet in photography and enjoys it. That, or a D200 (used) or D300 (used or new). The D40/D60 takes great pictures, but one is limited in the lenses that those cameras can autofocus with. The D90 offers more lens choices, and the D200/D300s offer the most choices.

D90 and D200/D300 also offer more control over various settings.

As I said, the D60 is a great camera but is limited in its capabilities. A used D80 / D90 is not going to constrain her as much. You can safely buy used cameras from B&H Photo.com or Keh.com, or your local camera store may have trade-ins that they will provide a warranty for.
