Top hose gets really hot and temp spikes while bottom hose is normal. I thought coolant flowed from the water pump up through the radiator, to the thermostat and block back down to the pump but I looked at replacement radiators and they said "top left inlet and bottom right outlet" so maybe I was wrong. I'm trying to determine whether the radiator is clogged or the pump is failing.

It does makes more sense to go through the thermostat AFTER the engine and before the radiator. That means the radiator is not the problem, but maybe the water pump.
