Which circumstance is better for my story (cheesy grim reaper stuff)?

Hi there. I'm making a story about a grim reaper who is, in lack of better words, being punished for murder. Which is better?

1. Character was born as a grim reaper. She murdered people off the clock, and now, she has to serve the people she killed (or else she goes to my story's version of hell).

2. Character was born as a human, but turned into a grim reaper after she died. This happens when a "bad" person who is found useful for performing grim reaper duties can escape hell. A deal is made, and a mark/symbol is placed on said person to show the contract. If it's violated, this person goes back to hell.

So uh...yeah. The MC has to serve the people she killed either way. Brutal honesty please.
