which cheap old Japanese car would be best to restore into a muscle car?

here's the thing. i live in Sri Lanka (lil island close to India) and we don;t get Fords or any American cars here. Mostly cars Like Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan or Honda.

I''ve had a thing for muscle cars for a long time. but they don't EXIST here. Importing one would cost a fortune with all the taxes.

I'm not too familiar with most of the technical aspects of them either.

I've noted that there are some old cars (one's made around 1980s) by Toyota, Nissan(like the B2 11) and Mitsubishi (old 80s Lancer or Galant) have a similar body and frame for the kind of task im looking at. And these cars are available here and relatively cheap too(around US$1000-3000)
Would it be possible to replace the engines with better ones(of the same make...can't get down American ones here), transmission, etc?

Thinking of putting in smthn like a 3L engine (the higher the engine capacity, the most expensive they are here cos of taxes) and a new transmission, etc.
what other work would i be looking at here?
cost? (equipment cost only. Labor is cheap)

thanks!

See if you can find a 1970's Toyota Celica.

That's a 1977.

Sorry, not familiar with what you can find in Sri Lanka, but that would be a good candidate, if you ask me.

Looks muscle, but Toyota car. Cost of work, would depend on how much it needs done to it.
