Which car to buy for a college girl? Toyota Matrix or Honda Civic?

I'm just a clueless mom trying to surprise my daughter. I know that Toyota and Honda are reliable brands. I'm looking for a good balance of quality, price, and looks. Thanks for anyone who helps or at least looked at my request.
 
I'll get the toyota matrix honda civic is also a nice car but i like toyota better.
 
You have one lucky daughter! I am an absolute Honda fan. I have driven them since 1987. Put over 200,000 miles on a couple of them (my current Accord has 214,000 miles). I have never had to do more than change the oil and the timing belt in any of my Hondas. Toyota, however, is a good second choice. I think it all comes down to personal preference on the features and style. Also think about where it will be most convenient for her to get the car serviced (which dealership will be closer or has better hours for service, etc)
