I am getting a Canon Rebel T3i. I already have a 35-80mm EF lens from my 35mm EOS 66 camera and I have heard that its quality is almost the same as the standard EF-S 18-55mm lens that is included in a canon dslr kit. I don't want to waste my money on the latter since I already have the former. Now, I'm really torn between the EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro (macro lens) and the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS (telephoto zoom lens) and I can only afford one.
I'm more of a close-up and macro person (but I also do the occasional street photography). However, I would also like a lens that can sub for general use, if ever my 35mm breaks. I'm pretty sure my family will also rely on me for those family vacation photos, so I really have to make a good decision here.
Have any of you used these lenses? Which would you prefer? I'm currently leaning towards the telephoto zoom lens, but I'm still not sure and I need your opinion.
Also, both lens are at around $300 based on Canon's website. I don't really care much about which is cheaper. Here are the links for the two:
