new guy dies? I think it's a book, written in the first person. I have an idea that it has a hint of sci-fi, in the same way that A Clockwork Orange does. It may or may not have been turned into a film - I have a vague memory of seeing it on a screen, but I don't know if I'm only imagining it.
There are three men in a prison cell, one of whom is the narrator. The reason for his being in prison is a main aspect of the story. Another is a rapist; one of them is a mathematician (maybe). A new convict arrives and harrasses the narrator, attempting to get into bed with him. The three men beat up the new arrival, and the narrator kicks him in the face, whilst the others cheer him on. The man dies, and the guards find him the next day.
The narrator's cellmates tell the warden/guards that it was he who killed the man.
Any ideas?
