Which bike should I buy?

I had a Trek 1000 that got stolen a couple months ago and I'd like to replace it. I'm thinking of going with some kind of mountain bike this time, or at least something a bit more agreeable to mud and rain (I'm in the Pacific Northwest). I also don't need a drivetrain with 20+ gears. On the Trek 1000 I kept the front sprocket in the middle and that was all the gears I needed for commuting. Anyone have any advice for me on which ones I should check out?
 
I would take a look at the Trek 7200 or 7300, a mountain bike is not a good bike to commute on. I bought a hybrid bike that doesn't have shocks and it works good on dirt and gravel roads. It's also fast on the road and will accept fenders and racks. You should check out some of the commuter bikes
