Which bike is right for me?

I am in the market for a bike for recreational use. I would like to go on both paved trails and terrain trails but I am not sure which bike to buy. I do not want to spend more than $300 but I want a reliable bicycle that will last for years to come.
So what I am asking is which type of bike ether a mountain bike or a comfort bike and which brand would be best for my situation.
