I live in Austin, TX and am looking at getting a new bike, yet I am unsure as to which one I should buy? I am looking at spending right at $1000 and I want something I can use to go to school/work (roughly 20 miles per day), so I was considering a road bike (maybe a TREK FX) as I know it would meet my commute needs. But I have some friends with 29ers who go to Barton Springs to ride regularly on their hardtails with front suspension and I would love to be able to do this with them on occasion. Could I commute 20 miles a day on a 29er or would the acceleration be too much? (I'm 6'3" 200lbs so it may be feasible but I'm new to cycling regularly) Should I just stick with an urban/road bike, as school/work are my first priorities. or should I go with the 29er and get my occasional off-road fix in.
