Hello,
I have seasonal allergies and have been using Allegra and Nasonex to keep them under wraps. I recently signed up for an HMO at work and went to see a doctor for allergy medicine. Of course, they suggested over the counter stuff, but none of them work well, so I asked for a prescription for Allegra and Nasonex (they've been working for me so far, without any problems). They asked to try some of the cheaper, generic alternatives, so I agreed and tried them, but they didn't work well (or had bad side effects). I asked again for the other stuff, and they refused and referred me to see an allergy specialist. But the specialist has a 3 month waiting list.
As far as I can tell, the HMO doctors refuses to prescribe the medicine because their costs are higher than the cheaper alternatives, so they are giving me the run around. Because I'm on an HMO, I'm required to see one of their doctors, so seeing one outside the network will cost out-of-pocket. (The prescription drugs are covered by them, I already checked). I was wondering how people find inexpensive doctors for simple diagnostics such as allergies. All other doctors I've seen in the past have suggested drugs to use, but if I requested a certain one, they're ok with prescribing it.
Thanks for the help!
