Where to do an iPhone update?

I have a question. I have an iPhone and ATT said it really needs an update that not having an update is causing a lack in 3G everywhere I used to have it even in their store.

Is an update really the problem?

If so so I have to do it through a computer the computer I use for my music and iTunes has crashed and I can't use it till it's fixed. So is there anywhere or way else I can do it?
