Im going on a trip to south carolina, will be staying around myrtle beach, but would be willing to drive to the far reaches of the states given an appealing destination.

please suggest any historical sights, state/national parks, etc.. the older the better!
additionally, i must add that places just across the borders in adjacent states are acceptable as well.

Charleston is full of history! I think it is about an hour from MB. There is Ft. Sumter, working plantations, the Market where gullah people still make baskets. Make sure you take a horse drawn carriage ride around the city and the guide will fill your head full of historical facts about Charleston. On the way to Charleston on hwy 17 you will go thru the Francis Marion National Park. South Carolina is full of places that Francis Marion (the Swamp Fox) outwit the british.
Just south of MB is Huntington Beach State park and across the street is Brookgreen gardens. Huntington beach has the old castle of Anna Hyatt Huntington and her husband (sorry can't remember his name) Brookgreen gardens is full of her artwork.
IF you drive up 17 north into Wilmington there is an old battleship there. You will drive through North Myrtle Beach (the home of Vanna White)
You could also drive further south to Savannah which is pretty rich with its own southern heritage. (However, Charleston is better)
I think Charleston would be your best bet but do some research on Francis Marion or the swamp fox and I am sure you will find some interesting facts.
