Where is the thermostat located on a 1985 honda shadow vt 500?

!985 honda shadow vt 500 is overheating. wondering if i can just bypass the coolant system all together.
 
Follow the hoses and find the housing. It's probably in front of the front cylinder.
You should keep the cooling system in good repair if you want the bike.
 
Without looking at the bike I cant tell you exactly, but the easies way to find it is to follow the return line (from the top of the radiator) back to the engine. It is usually where the hose mounts to the engine.

As far as bypassing the cooling system, you should not do that. Doing so will not allow the engine to have enough cooling capacity, and will overheat to a detrimental level.
