Where was the ancient Mayan civilization, and where is it now in the present day?
 
the yucatan peninsula in mexico - the geography is noteworthy because it sits atop a limestone shelf. when europeans explored the mayan territory they were hindered by a lack of available drinking water. mayan ruins can be found across the peninsula - cancun, mexico is a present day tourist destination there.
