Where is the LED flashing red light when Blackberry 8900 is on silent?

I put my Blackberry 8900 on silent but the flashing red LED light seems not to work under this profile. I don't want my phone to ring but I want to know if I have any messages waiting. Is it possible to both have the Blackberry on silent and have the LED light flashing?
