where is the alternator on a 2004 mazda tribute 6cyl 3.0?

Im in a dilema., my sister is broke down 3 hours away and her car is a a shop with a alternator problem and she is looking at 400 dollars. I want to know were the alternator is and can it be pulled out without the whole top of the motor having to come out as the mechanic says of can it be pulled from wheel well or drop out of the bottom. anything will help. or a website that shows a diagram of the engine. thanks guys please help
