where do we find information on my fathers assets?

My father past away last year, he had remarried several years before. Our step mother says he never had a will, and he left thousands of pounds of debt. My father was a well paid man and had travelled all over the world with his work. we have no access to any information regarding insurance policies, etc. we just need advice on how and where to get help
