Where do I find the law on how many car lengths you need to be away from the car in front of you when driving on a county road or highway? I think it is four, but I would like a website to go to, so I can show someone.

Thanks ahead of time.

The law is that you will follow at a safe distance.
You can find guidelines in most state drivers handbooks.
For the most part, drivers now are encouraged to use time and not distance. I use the three second rule. Meaning that I try to keep three seconds between me and the car in front of my. This takes into account driving speed and reaction time.
So if you want to know what your state suggests, go to the state DMV and look at the drivers handbook. In the section that deals with sharing the road with others or defensive driving.

It's not written, just common sense.

The best rule is to sight a fixed object near the car ahead.
Count, 1 and 2 and 3 and = 3 seconds
If you reach that object before finishing the count, you are driving too fast to safely stop, should that car hit a stationary object.

It's understood that when the car ahead applies brakes, one should not extrapolate. Look it up.
