Where did the "Which one do I shoot?" gag/scene originate from?

I've seen this spoofed in a lot of movies and shows, such as South Park, Futurama, recently Family Guy as well as in gags on the internet. The set up is basically someone is faced with two people that look alike, and doesn't know which one to shoot and has to choose which is the "right one" by whatever the plot decides who the right one to shoot is or is not.

I'm curious - where did this originate? I've seen it spoofed so many times, but never seen an original reference.
