If its the BAX-10 Peugeot transmission, scrap that pile of crap post haste! I'm not as familiar with the 4.2L but if you can bolt up an AX-15 5 speed then do it! Its not a super duty tough guy tranny but loads better than that european POS they put on the early wranglers. 500 bucks wont get you much in the way of something that will last. If you can scrape some more cash together, try looking for a used NV-4500. It is super strong, granny first gear and solid. The only draw back is it is a biggun....meaning you might have to body lift atleast 1 inch to fit it.... I'd just go for an AX-15 for now.
