I have an old smith and wesson revolver got it back in the sixtys in vietnam and would like to know where it came from and who owned it before me. Smith and Wesson wants to charge me $50. To find out with no gaurantees but I know there has to be a way to do the research myself so if anyone has any ideas i'd appreciate it.

There are no ways to check the history of a gun. The most one can do is find the original buyer but if going back that far I doubt you could even get that. Gun companies do keep records of where they ship their merchandise but I believe after 20 years they no longer have to keep those records.

There is no registration or record keeping in this country of firearms except the one the FBI and BAFTE uses that they are not by law allowed to keep.

There is no way to do all that......There is no registration. The best anyone will do or Smith will do is tell you when it was made.....maybe where and if it sold to a dealer or DOD.

There is no CARFAX for firearms.... And thank god for that.... I would hate it if somebody called me to inquire about a shotgun I sold 20 years ago..... I can imagine the stupid questions... were the barrel fluid levels changed every 3 months or 300 shots, was it involved with the murder of old aunt Molly, etc, etc....

I think I speak for most of us here.... Once I sell a weapon legally - I don't ever want to know where it went and how it was used......
