My family defected from the USSR and we had several people in our family tree that were officers in the Red Army during WW2 and WW1. We also had one person in our family who was a high-ranking officer in the Russian army who fought in the Russo-Japanesse war in 1905
How could I find there records? I have some of their medals and even a uniform, but I want to see phyiscal papers just for curiousity. Would I contact the Russian State Department? The US national archives? I don't want to pay some PI thousands of dollars just to find me a stack of papers. What can I do?
