I've got a sweet 58 Ford Thunderbird that is making noise in the rear diff, so I need to replace the 3rd member. Any suggestions where to get one from (or where NOT to get it from)?
This is the legendary 9" Ford removable differential.
You need to only know what axles you have (count the splines) and they are available from almost any specialty or performance parts catalog.
Additionally, this is a pretty basic differential to overhaul - your noise could be as simple as a bad pinion or carrier bearing. Even if it's the ring and pinion, this would still be less expensive than a complete assembly.
