Whenever I exercise I get sharp pains in my left shoulder?

When I work out, I usually do cardio. Typically, I use an elliptical machine for around an hour, but I also use stationary bikes and treadmills sometimes. When I've been going at it for a good 20 or 30 minutes, I suddenly get very sharp pains in my left shoulder muscle. I don't know what causes it or how to prevent it. It doesn't feel like a cramp, and I doubt it is anyway because it only happens in one specific spot, never anywhere else. Does anyone have any ideas of what is causing this or how I can prevent it?
By the way, this has been happening for years, not just recently if that makes a difference.
