Whenever I do ab exercise or crunches, my gag reflex kicks in?

I have become very unhappy with my figure, and I started doing some abdominal exercises such as crunches and planks to increase my core. However, after about 5 or 6 reps, my gag reflex starts to kick in, and i can't do any more without throwing up. I was wondering if there are any at-home exercises that you can do without affecting your gag reflex.
Thanks for the help =] the thing is, I have always had a bad gag reflex. It occurs even when i'm brushing my teeth or going to the dentist. Another thing is that i'm definitely not overweight, or at danger for being overweight. I just feel that i'm not fit enough in my core.

-other info: I'm a teenage male, if that matters at all.
